-> How to build a link cable between PC and HP48:

If your PC has 2 serial ports (COM1 and COM2) it's probable the mouse is attached in the COM1 port and the COM2 is available. This case, your HP MUST be connected in the COM2 (25 pines). The assembly schematic is this, at the left.

Note: If your modem is using the COM2 port, change it to COM4.

But if your PC has only one serial port (COM1 only), it's probable the mouse is attached in the COM1. In this case, your HP MUST be connected in the COM1 port (9 pines) and the mouse couldn't be used simultaneously with the HP48.The assembly schematic is this, at the left.

The worst part at the assembly of the cable is to get a 4 pine connector compatible with the HP48 serial port. A pratic way to get the connector is get it from a broken or useless mouse. Several mouses use this type of plug. I got it from an old  Metron "mouse 400" mouse. With the connector in your hands, the next step is to get a DB25 (COM2) or a DB9 (COM1) male connector, available in any electronics or computer store. Finally, use the soldering iron to connect the 4 wires in both of the connectors according the circuit assembly diagram. Before plug the cable in your PC or HP48, look for short-circuits or wrong connections. Ok, now connect the cable in both machines and configure your HP48 for:

- IR/wire:          wire
- ASCII/binary: binary
-baud:                9600
-parity:              none 0
chksum:  3     translate:  3

and use a connection program such as Kermit , or still better: an HP48 emulator or the HP Explorer.
